Learn

My goal in running sewing workshops is to meet each individual where they are and provide personalized support and guidance while learning new skills, or building confidently on existing ones. I have been sewing professionally for over 30 years. Over the years, I’ve sewn thousands of items and honed my skills through hands-on experience, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for the craft.

While there are many structured, learn to sew beginner classes available, what I offer is different. My workshops are flexible, individualized, and guided by your goals. Whether you’re brand new to sewing or looking to deepen your skills, these three workshops are designed to support any learning level.

Workshop 1:  Get to Know Your Sewing Machine

Have a sewing machine but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone. Many people own machines they barely use because they feel intimidating or confusing.
In this workshop, I’ll guide you through learning your machine at your pace. Whether you’re brand new, a bit rusty, or just need help troubleshooting, This session is tailored to your comfort level. Depending on time and experience, we may create a simple project such as a tote bag or pouch. You’ll leave feeling confident, informed, and ready to sew on your own.

Workshop 2:  Alterations - Make Your Wardrobe Work For You

Altering clothing is an incredibly practical skill.  It can save you money, help you earn money, and teach you a great deal about sewing overall. One of the best ways to learn how garments are constructed is to take them apart and rework them.
In this workshop, bring clothing you’d like to alter. We’ll work through as many pieces as time allows, focusing on techniques that make the most impact. If there are items we don’t finish, we can create a plan for next steps.

Workshop 3:  Stitch Together - Garment Creation and More

This workshop is open to all skill levels. My goal is to work alongside you as you create an item of your choosing.
Beginners can select a simple project and learn foundational techniques while building confidence. Intermediate and advanced sewists are encouraged to bring more complex ideas or skill-stretching projects. With experience across all areas of garment and item creation, I can help refine techniques, problem-solve challenges, and unlock the next level of understanding. Sometimes, having an experienced guide makes all the difference.

Testimonials

Picture
'Judy is a maker who embodies creativity, professionalism, and practicality in all she does. A full time sewist, her studio is a haven for imagining and doing. Her ability to listen to your sewing needs - from alterations to an existing piece or creating something from a vague idea - is remarkable. Skilled with a wide range of materials, she can craft anything from custom racing car seat covers to delicate hats. Machine or hand sewn, her attention to detail sets her work apart.
Fun to work with, time spent with her in her well appointed studio is always worth a visit!'

Judy's skills are beyond the typical sewist.  She can work with clients to create unique new pieces, relying on her incredible knowledge of fabrics and construction.  Reimagine and update wardrobes, kitbashing to achieve fashion perfection.  Or even recycle vintage finds into works of wearable art! I have personally utilized Judy's services for almost 25 years and never been disappointed.  While Judy has made me stunning clothing from handpicked fabrics, where she really shines is in her ability to reimage found (either from my closet or the thrift store) into pieces that strangers consistently stop me and ask about.

When we needed someone to sew bespoke heat suits for a stunt over a lava lake, Judy was our top pick. We had worked with her for 25 years and she sewed many commercial products for us with attention to detail. We could trust her with a project of this calibre. Those suits went on to be featured in Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley’s Believe it or Not!
